Fearing for the safety of her husband, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated in Adiala Jail, Bushra Bibi, the former first lady, has taken her concerns to the Islamabad High Court (IHC). She seeks increased security measures for him during his imprisonment.
In August, Imran Khan received a three-year prison sentence and a fine of Rs100,000 for providing false asset declarations to the Election Commission of Pakistan. Additionally, the PTI chief was disqualified from participating in the upcoming general elections, effectively ending his political prospects.
Adiala Jail, where Khan is presently held, has seen other former prime ministers serve their sentences in the past.
On Monday, Bushra Bibi, represented by her lawyer Latif Khosa, submitted a petition to the IHC expressing her fears that her husband might be subjected to harm, including the possibility of poisoning, while in prison.
In her petition, she pointed out that any tampering with Imran Khan’s food could endanger his life and emphasized that he was not receiving the entitled facilities according to the prison manual. She cited instances where other prisoners had been provided certain amenities, whereas her husband was even denied home-cooked meals.
Furthermore, Bushra Bibi contended that Imran Khan was facing inhumane treatment in jail, which she argued was a violation of Articles 9 and 14 of the Constitution. She implored the court to step in and ensure that court orders regarding the provision of necessary facilities to her husband in prison were enforced. Additionally, she requested the court to instruct the responsible medical officer to guarantee the supply of healthy food to Khan and to direct relevant authorities to grant him the privilege of exercising and taking walks during his incarceration.
