What is Ehsaas Nutrition 2023
Pakistan faces a high rate of malnutrition, with 40.2% suffering from chronic malnutrition, 28.9% underweight, and 7% with stunted growth, according to the STAR index. The first 1,000 days of a child’s life are critical for their future success. It’s essential to invest in healthy nutritional habits during this period as it shapes the foundation of strong human resources, driving economic growth in the modern era.
To combat undernutrition, the Benazir Income Support Program has initiated a conditional cash transfer program, enabling families benefiting from its other programs to access better health and nutrition services. This program’s technical design has been reviewed and approved by the Board of Benazir Income Support Program.
Ehsaas Nutrition Program – Objectives
The program’s primary objectives are as follows:
- Preventing Chronic Malnutrition and Stunting in Children Under Two Years of Age.
- Ensuring Weight Gain in Pregnant Women.
- Reducing Anemia and Micronutrient Deficiencies.
- Raising Awareness About Maternal and Childbirth Health and Nutrition.
- Enhancing the Utilization of Existing Health and Nutrition Services to Reduce Disease Burden.
Ehsaas Nutrition Centers
Under the Benazir Income Support Program, the Benazir Nutrition Program provides various foods and cash assistance ranging from 2,000 to 2,500 rupees. Beneficiaries of this program are those already receiving aid under the Ehsaas Program or the Benazir Income Support Program. The government has established Benazir Nutrition Centers where regular health checks and health-related guidance are provided.
Eligibility Criteria
The Benazir Nutrition Program provides cash support for pregnant and lactating mothers and children under two years of age, including pregnant and lactating mothers and children within beneficiary families. Boys receive 2,000 rupees, while girls receive 2,500 rupees. To receive this support, women should undergo regular medical check-ups, participate in quarterly dietary awareness sessions, and ensure their children receive vaccinations.
Initially, the program was launched in 14 districts and has expanded nationwide due to its success.
